Photograph albums richly documenting social and leisure activities of a circle of young middle-class Chinese American friends, possibly based in San Francisco. Both albums include numerous snapshots taken during outings in San Francisco (including Chinatown, among many other locations) and other California cities, including Stockton, Oakland, Santa Cruz (with a few views of that city's Chinatown), Locke and Lodi. Albums also include several scenes of men posing in or near automobiles, some of them while on the job as drivers (perhaps for the Diamond Transfer Co., or Diamond Stage Line?), some during pleasure drives. Includes a small number of views of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition; the Portola Parade of 1913 and a New Year's Day parade, both in Stockton; and other unidentified marches, automobile races and other public events. Both albums also include numerous small-format portraits of this same circle of Chinese Americans, and perhaps family members, depicted in both traditional and modern Western attire. One group portrait depicts young men, many of them likely Chinese Americans, posing in front of a college building, some of them holding banners of universities (U.C. Berkeley, Stanford, Illinois, etc.). A few individuals depicted in the albums are identified by their full names (e.g. Tom Bing, Chester W. Lee, Sam K. Gee, Tim Gunn, Rose Chow), some by only their first name or nickname (including "Yip", the compiler of the albums), but most are not identified.
